DSP Conference

Yesterday I had the honor of being a presenter at my first ever big conference! The direct support professionals conference gave me the opportunity to discuss the importance of letting your clients be in charge of their own lives as much as possible rather that be letting them be part of self advocate groups and organizations like people first or writing their own post secondary education plans! Whatever the case may be if you are a DSP please remember that you have a responsibility to:

1. Dsp has a responsibility to self advocates to lead by example, help people get involved rather that be in person or virtually, find opportunities and support them in the advocacy movement!

2.DSP’s responsibility is to make sure my voice is heard. They need to make sure the doctor talks to me and not you. You need to help me remind my guardian that it is my life and I should have an opinion in it. Make sure I am able to use my rights as a human

3. DSP role is about helping others discover who they are and helping dreams be a reality. Participating in self advocacy helps bring awareness, knowledge, and joy and this should be felt by all of us.
